"Reflecting on Leadership: Why People Follow
As I hosted a leadership summit, I pondered why people would take the time to attend. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the school gate to the venue, so what motivates them to make the effort?
I drew inspiration from John C Maxwell's five levels of leadership. Starting from the first level - position - I realized I had initially taken this for granted. However, it was the subsequent levels that truly resonated with me: relationship and production.
People attended the summit because of our relationships and the value I had demonstrated through my actions. They saw the impact I had made and wanted to learn from my experiences.
The reflection of you reading this: what makes people want to listen to you? Is it just your title, or is there substance beyond that? Personally, I realized that without my title, I needed to have something of value to offer.
Through this experience, I recognized the importance of building genuine relationships and delivering results. I also acknowledged the limitations of my influence in certain areas and the need to grow and develop as a leader.
As leaders, let's ask ourselves: what makes people want to follow us? Is it just our position, or do we have something more to offer?"
