LABARINA - MY BUS DRIVER

LABARINA - MY BUS DRIVER

Today, after my 12 o'clock prayers, I headed home to get transport fare to pick up my stuff from the printing press, which I did via a local transport bus. Successfully collecting them, I boarded another bus to head back home.

As I entered the bus, a few minutes into the drive, as we stopped to pick up more passengers, I noticed our driver arguing with some VIO officials at Okere junction. Apparently, they claimed the driver didn't park well. One of the officials entered the bus, and the driver continued arguing while driving. The officials were threatening him, but I remained calm, while the other passengers, including an elderly woman, were pleading with them on behalf of the driver.

The driver eventually stopped the bus and got down to talk to the other officials in the keke napep behind. Immediately he stepped down, the VIO official who entered the bus took over his steering wheel. The driver came back and asked for it, but he refused. Immediately, one of the other officials told the driver to get back in the bus to the passenger's seat. The driver was initially confused but later agreed. Instead of joining his bus, he joined the vehicle used by the VIO officials so he could plead with them.

The other passengers continued begging the VIO official who now became our driver to have mercy, but he refused, saying "forgiveness is a sin." That's when I intervened, saying that's a pagan statement, and that he'll have to answer to God for those words.

After covering a short distance, the VIO officials eventually drove close in the other vehicle and told their colleague to stop the bus, but he refused, claiming he had been insulted by the ladies in the bus. However, he eventually stopped the bus reluctantly close to their office.

We later discovered that the VIO officials had taken 10,000 naira from the driver, despite claiming they had pity on him because he had no money and his wife had just given birth. The driver was lamenting throughout the journey, but he appreciated us passengers for staying in the bus and supporting him. I finally got down. That's my account of what happened today.
