LABARINA - THE CARPENTER'S SON
LABARINA
THE CARPENTER'S SON
Matthew 13:55-57 KJV
[55] Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? [56] And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? [57] And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
The lesson here is that:
1. Familiarity can breed contempt: Jesus' own community, family, and friends struggled to recognize his divine authority and mission because they knew him as a ordinary person, a carpenter's son.
2. Preconceptions can limit our understanding: The people of Jesus' hometown had preconceived notions about him based on his humble origins and family connections, which prevented them from seeing him as the Messiah.
3. A prophet is often not appreciated in their own context: Jesus' statement highlights that people often fail to recognize and appreciate the value and wisdom of those closest to them, especially those who have grown up among them.
4. Don't let familiarity or preconceptions blind you to the truth: This passage encourages us to look beyond our initial impressions and preconceptions, and to be open to the possibility that someone familiar to us may have a deeper purpose or message to share.
5. Jesus' message is for everyone, regardless of background or social status: Despite the rejection he faced from his own community, Jesus continued to share his message of love, redemption, and salvation with all people, regardless of their background or social status.
