LABARINA - THE OLDER ONES AND THE NORM

THE OLDER ONES AND THE NORM

Good evening, everyone. Today, I had a profound experience while teaching that made me reflect on our behavior towards others. One of my students was acting stressed or abnormal, and I initially wanted to react harshly. However, I took a moment to calm down and responded gently instead.

Later, during a discussion with fellow youths, we shared concerns about the way older generations were treating us. I recalled an incident involving an elder who seemed to be targeting the youths, and I wondered why he behaved that way. It dawned on me that perhaps his behavior was shaped by his own experiences when he was young.

This realization made me understand that the way we were treated in the past can influence how we treat others, especially those younger than us. If we were treated harshly or unfairly, we may unintentionally pass on that behavior to the next generation, creating a cycle of hurtful behavior that's challenging to break.

The incident with my student earlier and observing some of my peers made me realize that we're already adopting the same behaviors as the older generation by default. I strongly believe it's crucial for us to recognize this pattern and make a conscious effort to change our behavior.

We often say things like, 'You think you have it tough? Do you know how I was treated when I was your age? Do you know what we went through?' When these statements become our default response, we're already losing sight of the issue. Amidst our complaints, let's also examine how we're treating the younger generation below us.

It's time for us to break this cycle and create a more positive, supportive environment for everyone."
