BREAD & STONES

BREAD & STONES

MOTHER: (to her twins, Laju and Toju) Have you seen that girl, Delilah? She's pregnant already. Just like her name. (shaking her head)

LAJU and TOJU: (nodding in pity)

MOTHER: And Toju, remember your friend Philemon?

TOJU: Yes, Philemon. What about him?

MOTHER: He's a drug addict now. (sighs) But I trust you both. I'm proud of the proper upbringing I've given you. You're the best this community has ever produced.

(Just then, their father, Mr. Frederick, walks in, having overheard the conversation)

FATHER: (clearing his throat) Ah, I think there's something you should know. (looks at Toju) Tell your mother what I saw in your room.

MOTHER: (confused) What's going on?

FATHER: (firmly) Let them speak for themselves.

(After a moment of silence)

LAJU: (tearfully) Mum, I'm sorry. I aborted a pregnancy. I was scared and made a mistake.

MOTHER: (shocked and crying) Oh, Laju! How could you? You killed a baby!

TOJU: (also tearfully) And mum, I'm sorry too. I've been taking drugs... cocaine and marijuana.

MOTHER: (devastated) Oh, my children! I can't believe it!

FATHER: (sadly) You see, my dear, we thought we were doing our best, but we left God out of the equation. It's God who keeps us from evil, not just our upbringing.
