The Importance of Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management (HRM) plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being and dignity of employees. Unfortunately, many organizations neglect this aspect, prioritizing profits over people.

Recently, I encountered two disturbing stories that highlighted the consequences of poor HRM. A fast-food restaurant worker was treated poorly by her boss, denied food, and forced to hide to eat. What's more, the worker shared that her boss would often go out to do charity work, yet failed to show compassion to her own employees, who were also in need of support and care.

Another individual shared their tedious and demanding job, waking up at 2-3 am to attend to customers without adequate support or recognition from their manager. When they complained about the stress and pressure of their job, their manager callously replied that they had been paid to do the job, showing little concern for their well-being.

These scenarios demonstrate a lack of effective HRM. The Guest Model, which focuses on organizational performance, seems to be the primary concern of the managers in these stories. However, this approach neglects the importance of employee well-being, dignity, and satisfaction.

In contrast, the Storey Model emphasizes the importance of HRM in achieving organizational goals while considering the needs and interests of employees. This approach recognizes that employees are valuable assets who deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and support.

Organizations must adopt a more holistic approach to HRM, balancing performance with employee well-being and satisfaction. By doing so, they can create a positive work environment, increase productivity, and retain top talent. Effective HRM is not just a moral imperative; it's a business necessity.
