OIL CITY - SEASON 1

OIL CITY
SEASON ONE
“OVIE ‘S DEATH”

NEWS OF OVIE’S DEATH
The news of Ovie’s death spread like wildfire and was the talk of the community. The truth was yet to be revealed, but stories were formulated based on assumption. And yes, there were eyewitnesses but they remained unknown.
Mama Ovie who had just lost her husband to alcoholism(which has sniffed life out of jobless and depressed men and also rendered the lives of aspiring youths useless) had yet another reason to mourn. Family members and friends didn’t fail to re-visit to console her. While some came to mourn and console, others came to gossip. Mama Ovie, a member of a social club named “Oghenerukwe”, was spirit-lifted when members of her social club trooped into her house in numbers. It was a norm in her social club that if situations like this occurred amongst them, persons would be scheduled to spend the night with the affected individual because an idle man, the Bible says, is the devil’s workshop. But unlike them (Social club Members), this brought contention, volunteers got scarce and those assigned were reluctant to comply. The contention led to a serious quarrel amongst them, and they soon forgot the main reason for their visit. The quiet atmosphere turned into a market place as things got out of hand, the living room turned into a wrestling ring, and furniture were almost destroyed. Mama Ovie’s neighbors who were available at the time, attended to the situation, managing to restore a little bit of quietness, but the heat remained unquenched within. Mama Ovie in tears expressed her disappointment, pointing out areas she had been of help to nearly everyone of them. She renounced her membership and made the door open for anyone who wished to leave. Silence was maintained after her speech and little by little, part of her social club members who were known to be proud left, leaving the sober ones behind.
